Context
: Laos is known
as the poorest country on the planet.
The average yearly income of its
inhabitants is around 300 USD. Since
1975, this country has become the
Popular Democratic Republic. The
government's politics is nonetheless
still inspired by the Single Party,
but has opened up to the market
economy. It is a enclaved country
disposing of very few natural ressources,
besides important hydraulic ressources
and a highly protected natural site.
Laos, country which 85% of its population
is peasant, is also the 3rd opium-producing
country in the world... As in Vietnam,
there is a great ethnic diversity,
67 ethnic minorities representing
33 % of the population. They have
little access to education.
It's the second year that Mission
Enfance has been working in Laos,
a very poor country. In 2007, we
have been able to carry out, thanks
to the Mrs Bounleua's energy, the
rehabilitation of three schools
in the Province of Attapeu, thereby
giving over 900 children access
to education.
The level of education in this
country is very low and the equipment
conditions of the schools are desastrous
(lack of teacher's training and
wages, lack of education equipment,
etc...). Mission Enfance has its
place in this country's context.
Each school suggested or location
has been visisted and supervised
by Mission Enfance which has obtain
the agreement of the concerned Office
of Education to pursue these projects.
